.How to get there
Already at the age of twelve Mayumi Mattheus collected and traded perfume samples and vials. Later, she devoured the successful novel "Perfume" by Patrick Süskind and developed a true weakness for the mysterious world of fragrances. Last year she finally fulfilled her long cherished childhood dream of having her own perfumery. She named her exquisite extraordinary fragrance store after her favorite author - Süskind.
Her business is unique. The shop, housed in a more than 300 year-old building on Scheitergasse, with its exposed wooden beams and stone walls, is in itself worth a visit. However, anyone who becomes familiar with the handpicked fragrances in this place, is certain to return time and again. The selection of premium luxury fragrances include unique creations such as the Montale, Lubin, Heeley, Vero Profumo and Odin. Interestingly, they are presented not by brand, but deriving from the same fragrance family.
There is a remarkable but not overwhelming number of perfumes, especially useful for "sniffing through" Mayumi emphasizes. She believes it is important that the customers feel they receive good advice and are sincerely thrilled at what they have bought. This sometimes requires several visits and Mayumi always finds time for everyone in her unobtrusive way. Now and then a customer lingers for hours and enjoys sampling the fine fragrances and a Latte Macchiato, which Mayumi offers from her small bar.
I myself couldn’t decide today on a new perfume. That doesn’t matter though, as I have a wonderful excuse to return to the store soon. And I surveyed two other special product lines offered here at Süskind: the hair care collection of John Masters and the Ellis Faas Dutch make-up line that is found exclusively here in the German part of Switzerland.
