I have always had a weakness for France. Probably the reason why Restaurant Lumière has always been one of my personal favourites in Zurich. A lively bistro atmosphere, quaintly set tables and Entrecôte Café de Paris, the Spécialité Maison, all create the typical French ambience of the Lumière.
And nothing has changed in recent years, I noticed, when I visited Lumière again recently. Here, bankers, artists, Zurich locals, and tourists meet. The slight difference being that the locals generally get their favorite outside table in the summer with their reservation.
With a cüpli i.e. glass of champagne, we sit in the middle of Zurich's Old Town, enjoy the last rays of the sun and are torn between the choice of dishes. Saumon Gravlax and Escalope de Veau au Citron sounds just as tantalising as the Tartare de Thon et Avocat followed by a Coq au vin with potato purée. I decide on the latter while my companion opted for a salade verte "Coeur de Laitue" and the Cordon Bleu with Pommes Allumettes.
Our food was excellent. The lightly marinated tuna and avocado tartar and the green salad were delectable and super fresh, the chicken with red wine sauce tender, and the freshly mashed potato and the cordon bleu without a doubt "one of the best in our city", my companion asserted.
We were just as satisfied with the service, which in my experience has always been extremely attentive. Which is precisely why the Lumière has remained worthwhile in the last twelve years.
