.How to get there
Just a short walk from Zurich's central railway station is a little gem for lovers of creative output of all kinds: the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich. Not only does it inspire with innovative exhibitions on topics such as design, graphics, fashion and applied arts, but also with all kinds of treasures from its internationally significant collection, making it always worth a visit.
The inspiring exhibitions showcase works by renowned designers and up-and-coming talents, conveying the history of design and its significance in our everyday lives. It all starts with the museum building from the 1930s by Adolf Steger and Karl Egender, an outstanding example of Swiss modernist architecture.
Around 2000 exhibits from applied arts, graphic design, poster, textile, furniture and product design demonstrate the beautiful, exciting and often strange design world in our everyday lives to visitors in the basement. The world's most extensive collection of posters on the upper floor is also worth a visit, offering a great insight into their thematic, geographical and historical diversity.
After an extensive tour, the Swiss furniture classics and current designs in the Swiss Design Lounge above the large exhibition hall invite you to relax and reflect on what you have seen. And if you want to buy a stylish piece of design for your home, visiting the well-curated museum shop is highly recommended. High-quality design products for everyday use, as well as posters, books, unique pieces and timeless classics such as the Rex vegetable peeler or Bauhaus products, can be found in its range.
After so much mental and visual input, the body needs refreshment. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and homemade cake outside on the pond's banks in the museum park. Otherwise, the daily homemade soups, changing pasta dishes or tasty daily specials such as piadine and sandwiches are also delicious inside.
Good to know: The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is also part of the Zurich Museum Pass, making a short visit worthwhile.
