I chose a fun day for my arrival into Zurich - the 11th of November. The beginning of carnival meets pre-Christmas-time in the city. Whilst en route from the station to Marktgasse Hotel in the heart of the city, I witness numerous fancy-dressed groups accompanied with festive music while the first Christmas decorations are being mounted. The sun is shining, the Limmat River sparkles, and I'm happy to be here. And even happier as I enter the hotel and I'm so warmly welcomed by the receptionist.
In the elevator a wall is covered with paper and felt pens, inviting creativity to unfold. The green carpet in the corridors feel like lovely, soft moss. On each floor there is fresh drinking water from a splendid fountain. My room category 'Generous' is about 30 m2 and quite spacious. Wooden floors, an intelligent and aesthetically pleasing wardrobe, a comfortable chair, a desk so beautiful that I'd love to take home, and a most inviting, fluffy-looking bed. On a wooden shelf on the wall, I discover a folder with "Those who do not travel read only one page" inscribed. City map, jogging map and information on everything noteworthy to discover in Zurich is revealed inside. As well, of course, details regarding the house and room service.
Those into sport and relaxation can enjoy free access to the Fitnesspark Hamam Münstergasse in the immediate vicinity. Two culinary restaurants offer room service. Delish Café Take-Out serves breakfast and snacks, while in Baltho Restaurant and Bar you can end the day with an elegant aperitif, dinner or cocktails. Both restaurants are also open to the public. I like the active exchange of the hotel with the city. The library & salon can be hired out for events; recitations and artistic soirees have also been planned.
When I return late at night, I am relieved to note two things: the speed of the W-LAN and the remarkable silence. Finally, I sink between the soft pillows on the heavenly bed. The mattresses are from Schramm manufacturers and I send a quick mental 'Thank You' to the German family business as I fall into a deep slumber.
The next morning I enjoy the delicious scents of the AESOP toiletries, that I find in the bathroom. Before check-out I spend time in the spacious lounge, where the reception is. A coffee and tea bar, a large dining table and small seating areas invite you to read the newspaper and to admire the historic murals on the walls.
After gentle and respectful restoration of the building, the Marktgasse Hotel has created a modern and cosmopolitan ambience. Even if you sit on designer furniture, while working on the laptop, you can feel the rich history of the house and it certainly makes one feel at home.
