Baltho Küche & Bar
Marktgasse 17
8001 Zurich-District 1
.How to get there
The Baltho is the restaurant and bar belonging to the Marktgasse Hotel, which our Viennese guest author Nicola Gold wrote about in November, shortly after its opening. Modern and classic at the same time, the restaurant, bar, and the boutique hotel emanate an exceptional ambience in the heart of the lively Niederdorf.
On our visit, we chose an obviously quiet evening. The evening before last, the restaurant was booked for a private event and on the following evening, "Talent Night" took place for the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF). That a new hotspot in Zurich's nightlife has arrived was made apparent to us when we were served with our 'Züri Mule' with Turicum Gin.
But one thing after another. On the menu, several dishes were made "gluschtig" as the Swiss would say. We finally tasted the "Steinpilz-Crostini", an hour egg - served after just fifteen minutes - as well as the "Bang Bang Chicken" and a surf & turf consisting of beef fillet and lobster tail. The Onsen-egg in its creamy texture with potato foam and truffle vinaigrette proved to be the highlight.
Delightful and professional, we found the service as convincing and enjoyable as the food. It was also owing to the selection of our nightcaps at the bar after a sweet indulgence of Pavlova with double cream and salted chocolate cake.
In a Turkish copper cup we were served the above mentioned 'Züri Mule' with Ginger-beer, peppermint, and candied ginger. In the truest sense of the word, the most spiciest drink I've ever had and precisely the reason I shall return to the Baltho again!
