Vienna Easter markets enjoyment, crafts and Easter fun in and around Vienna

Advertorial

The many chocolate bunnies on the supermarket shelves have been announcing it for weeks, and the warm temperatures of the last few days have made it unmistakably clear: Easter is just around the corner! Gone are the cold winter days when you had to scurry through the streets wrapped up in thick clothing because the sun was stingy with its warmth. Instead, it's blossoming, greening and chirping. The parks are filled with sun-seekers and playing children - and soon one or two Easter bunnies.

We still have to wait a while before the big Easter feast with Easter brunch and/or roast (for the grown-ups) and egg hunt (for the little ones). In Vienna, however, the Easter fun already starts this weekend - that's when the traditional Easter markets open their stalls.
Like so many other things, they have been cancelled in recent years because of the pandemic. So all the greater is the anticipation of finally visiting all the colourful markets again with their culinary delicacies and ornate Easter decorations.

Schloss Schönbrunn

One of the most famous Easter markets is the one at Schloss Schönbrunn. The extensive park and the baroque palace façade form a genuinely romantic backdrop. Around 60 stalls gather on the imposing forecourt: in the displays, all kinds of handicrafts - wood carvings, ceramics, glass art and jewellery - and Easter decorations. Sweet and savoury delicacies provide for physical well-being, and on weekends at lunchtime, changing jazz and swing ensembles play. Meanwhile, children can enjoy making marzipan bunnies and Easter flower arrangements in the Easter bunny workshop.

Old Viennese Easter Market on the Freyung

At the heart of the old town, on one of the most beautiful squares in Vienna, there is also an Easter atmosphere from April 1st. The Old Viennese Easter Market on the Freyung, with the medieval Schottenstift in the background, attracts visitors with a varied cultural and musical programme and traditional Easter specialities such as Easter pintzes and baked Easter lamb.
Local music and dance groups perform daily from 4:30 pm. There are also old Easter traditions to discover, such as palm bush tying or ratcheting (I could tell you what that is now... but even better, visit the market and find out for yourself!). There is also a handicraft workshop and Punch and Judy show for children.

Ostermarkt Am Hof

A few hundred metres further on, the following Easter market is already waiting for a visit: markets were held regularly at Am Hof in the late Middle Ages. The tradition still lives on today, among other things, with the Easter market that takes place here every year. Around the Mariensäule, almost 70 exhibitors treat visitors to beautiful handicrafts and fine food. With its location in the historic centre, a visit to the market can be wonderfully combined with a stroll through Vienna's city centre.

Schloss Hof

Around 60 kilometres east of Vienna, just before the Slovakian border, lies Schloss Hof, and Easter fun has recently arrived there, too. Prince Eugene of Savoy had the former fort converted into an imposing palace complex at the beginning of the 18th century. Later, Maria Theresa resided in the country estate, which is still surrounded by a romantic park.

Every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday until Easter Sunday, there is a colourful Easter programme to discover around the castle. There is plenty on offer for children, from Easter egg hunts and carriage rides to craft activities in the Easter bunny workshop. The garden invites you to take a springtime stroll, and those who like can also visit the castle on a guided tour.
