Altmann & Kühne Confectionery for tiny chocolates

The Altmann & Kühne confectionery was founded over a hundred years ago and already supplied the imperial court. Today, the small manufacturer near St. Stephen's Cathedral is still one of Vienna's institutions and the taste of the fine pralinés is known far beyond the borders of Vienna.

A pleasing chocolate scent welcomes you into the small shop. The original cherry wood counter and shelves were designed by the star architect of the 1920s, Josef Hofmann. Today it is a listed building and transports customers back to times long past. Little pralines filled with nougat, marzipan and cocoa line the displays.

Every single confection is still stirred, rolled, filled and decorated with various patterns by hand at Altmann & Kühne. Traditionally, the pralinés are then filled into colourful boxes according to a particular pattern. The bright paper for the small chests of drawers, hat boxes and sewing boxes was once designed by the Wiener Werkstätten, who still make them today.
