The city behind us, the Elbe before us – even true city natives are unable to hold back the occasional Wow! in light of this terrific view over Hamburg's piers.
The waiter, young and very courteous, welcomes us warmly and with a delicate rose crémant awaiting. We leaned back and took a look around: truly comfortable, candlelight, tables wrapped in white linen, and I pictured the wonderful breeze of fresh air in summer. When they pulled out the floor-to-ceiling windows, the pavement turned into a pedestrian stage, somewhat like the typical holiday scenery you would expect to see in France or Italy.
With a seasonal emphasis, the amuse gueule arrived in form of a small bowl of asparagus soup. Apart from the lovely staff, their perfectly timed breaks in between courses made it even more delightful.
Our entrées, a filet of Duroc pork on artichokes and codfish on white asparagus, potatoes and a classic Sauce Hollandaise were cooked to perfection and deserve nothing but praise. Finally, our immaculate dinner experience came to an end with an opulent cheese plate.

Inspired by the true people of the quays, the diligent haulers of the harbor, we went with a Hamburg original for the digestif: Helbings, a 175-year old caraway schnaps. Cheers!
