Chapeau!
Moorfuhrtweg 9
22301 Hamburg-Winterhude
.How to get there
I was not expecting this in quiet Winterhude: current hotspot Chapeau is loud, exotic, dark, untamed and slightly freakish. This restaurant represents everything an inside tip should hold: opened in 2013, Chapeau lies somewhat hidden right by the Goldbek canal. The interior as well as the whole concept itself are extraordinary and the high quality burgers have established a reputation well beyond Hamburg.
The interior is all about 'upcycling'. Finds range from extraordinary to antique, from rustic wooden tables to squeaky floors and dark walls carrying art, or the regional Frisian tiles – what a mixture! The seating booths are separated by metal lattices, in the very middle there's a big bar which serves as the ultimate landmark for networking folks and drink aficionados.
The music was loud but good. We're very excited about the promising menu: chef de cuisine Lukas Halfmann presents French-infused grills, Entrecôte, Bœuf Robbespierre, a Catch of the Day as well as vegetarian dishes such as burrata on green asparagus and grilled avocado. Placid waiters wearing bow-ties and hats were effortlessly carrying around hot plates to each table.
Obviously we went for the infamous Chapeau Burger, to join in on the talk. The blue cheese variation as well as the cheddar one are not only gigantic, but hugely delicious too. We're convinced: finally Hamburg has a 'best burger in town' again!
And even though Chapeau attracts a lot of attraction among its fellow Winterhude restaurants, it's definitely an original asset for the neighborhood!
