Windhorst Bar
Dorotheenstraße 65
10117 Berlin-Mitte
.How to get there
Three bright yellow letters announce "BAR" and point the way to the hidden gem in the middle of Mitte. How can a bar be so centrally located and yet so hidden? Located in the triangle between Friedrichstraße, Unter den Linden and the government district, hardly any random strollers walk along this section of Dorotheenstraße. The atmosphere at the counter is correspondingly familiar and personal. Chef Kolja Kleeberg, who counts Windhorst Bar among his favorite places, likes it too.
Some regulars may still remember the days in the fall of 2001, two years after the opening, when the neighboring historic military department store still housed the headquarters of the U.S. Embassy. The immense security measures after 9/11 also affected the bar, and guests had to pass through a police container to get a drink, show IDs and were only allowed at the bar after the security check.
Those were hard times for operator Günter Windhorst, but loyal regulars help a brave restaurateur through a crisis. Then, as now.
Windhorst designed the elegant counter himself to create an ergonomically ideal model for mixing his legendary whiskey sours or one of his own delicious creations, such as the perfectly balanced "Nordic Line Cocktail" made from aquavit with a port wine finish, balsamic vinegar, port wine, banana liqueur and Amontillado sherry.
Windhorst masters the classics around Old Fashioned, Sour and Negroni to perfection and is never tired for a variation. Even connoisseurs are amazed when they look at display in the back, with handpicked spirits and elaborately imported specialties. Gin lovers will always get their money's worth, and single malt purists will also find exciting products. A beer to go with it? Then the Helle from Hofbräuhaus Traunstein is a pleasure.
The ham slicer at the entrance speaks for suitable bar snacks for the small appetite and the record player right next to it exposes the weakness of the operator for vinyl and jazz. So let's go to Windhorst Bar, the perfect place for a relaxed bar atmosphere, unagitated elegance and dreamy drinks.
