In its June edition of 1997 The World of Interiors showed fashion and interior designer Josephus Melchior Thimister's apartment. Dark wooden floors and off-white colored walls dominated the elegant, straight-lined rooms and functioned as a perfect background for a perfectly white polar bear.
The stuffed animal stood like a piece of art and caused an indescribable, mysterious atmosphere. I love taxidermy ever since. Not in abundance, the way you'll find it in British hunting lodges, but a well-staged selection.
My reaction was accordingly surprised and excited when I discovered the bizarre store of taxidermist Michael Weiss' on a little Steglitz back alley a few years ago. Countless animals of any kind and size are gathered here and offer the most unusual spectacle.
Ladies of age bring in their four-legged companions, prop men rent canaries in cages and me, I'm just looking forward to decorating the next Berlin pre-War apartment.
