The Tajik Tea Parlor went public at the Soviet Pavillion for the 1974 Leipzig Exhibition, with all its whimsical wooden carving elements, countless coloured pillows and rugs as well as traditional samovar. Symbolically standing for German-Russian friendship, it stayed in Berlin afterwards and was built into the Palais am Festungsgraben, where it's been functioning as a public tea room ever since.

In 2011, it had to leave the amenities and for a while, it seemed Berlin would lose it in its entirety. After going back and forth in long talks, a new home for the interior was finally found in Oranienburger Straße's Kunsthof. Since late last year, you can enjoy your tea right out of the samovar again. The tea room also serves pierogi, blini and pelmeni that can be consumed lying on the floor or sitting at traditional small tables.

Mondays are reserved for fairy tale sessions starting at 7:30 pm, and the guests listen carefully to the perky stories told vigorously by Nina Madlen Korn and Katja Popow. That's what I call a lively piece of GDR history!
