It’s our first visit to Italian restaurant Osteria Veneziana on Nollendorfstr. in Schöneberg, yet restaurant manager Ivo Girolo greets us as if we’ve been regulars for years. The small Osteria is still an insider tip, but after our perfect evening all’italiana we’re convinced that it won’t stay one for long.
In September of last year, Venetian Gianni Rossi opened his Osteria Veneziana not far from Nollendorfplatz. Only a few months before, he had given up his flourishing restaurant in Venice to enchant the people of Berlin with his authentic Venetian cuisine. But there aren’t just specialities from Venice on the menu, as other regions of Italy are known for equally good food.
And as with all Italians, the most important thing for Gianni Rossi is that it tastes fantastic. Which is what he does at Osteria Veneziana! Beginning with the wine, past the soft, crispy white bread with a traditional Venetian fish creme baccalà mantecato as our amuse bouche, to each of the rotating menu’s daily delicacies.

Here you’ll find whatever the market has to offer of particularly good freshness and quality. Some of the vegetables, especially the tomatoes, aubergine, and a specific kind of mangold common in Italian cuisine, always arrive fresh directly from Apulia, along with the buratta and some of the incredible cheeses.
Ivo Girolo is the perfect host and probably not well-known amongst some of the population. He moves nimbly between the bare wooden tables, chatting here and laughing there. Charming, as only one with Italian parents can be, yet discreet as a Swiss.
His wine recommendation- a Greco di Tufo from Friuli- completely meets our expectations and pairs incredibly with our starter. The swordfish carpaccio is so well prepared that we get caught up in every bite and completely forget about our conversation! Absolutely incredible!
The grilled octopus and chickpea puree, made by my request, naturally comes with polenta and is equally exquisite and lush. It’s served with crispy vegetables and fresh herbs, pesto, and little spice. Superb!
My companion is also swept away by her seafood risotto and peas. She’s most familiar with Italian cuisine and knows best. And so Osteria Venziana has become our new favourite Italian- and we’ve already booked our next table.
