Nickels – Bed Linen & Blankets
Sredzkistraße 58
10405 Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg
.How to get there
I have never seen a product range of that kind anywhere in Berlin. You would not believe the treasure chest of fabrics that is Nickels, not even if you took a sneak peak through its big window front on Sredzkistraße. For one, there is an incredible selection of plaids made of wool, mohair, alpaca, merino and cashmere. With each one being more beautiful than the next, it appears impossible to choose one. “I'll take them all!”
In-between, piles of sofa cushions: woven, embroidered or printed with geometric motives. I am in ecstasy. Just as the store owner and fashion designer Dorit Nickel, I've always had a weakness for textiles and can barely get enough of all the beautiful fabrics she has gathered in her store over the past three years. She remembers not finding a decent store for bedlinen in Berlin, so she decided to open up her own.
Stacked on the shelves are batches of bedlinen, predominantly soft natural colors and made exclusively from cotton or linen. Exquisite boxes and labels show off brand names such as Missoni, Fischbacher and LIBECO, the famous traditional Italian manufacture for finest linen. Stacked up on the bottom racks, I find bed covers and throws, all gentle in color but exceptional in workmanship and haptic.
The service that this store offers, however, I only discover during my talk with Mrs. Nickel herself. From bedding and fitted sheets to the right ticking, anything can be custom-made. Choose, for example, from among 50 colors of sateen or various of the store brand's exclusive fabrics.
The bed sheets are made from durable fabrics considering the individual height of your mattress. The cotton comes from a 150 year-old factory, where all steps of processing from the cotton wool to the finished fabric are done the traditional way. Awestruck, my hands run over the fabric – this will definitely be my next investment!
Even the interior for these beautiful linen are being made-to-measure at Nickel's. Mrs. Nickel shows me their sample of an inlay before putting it down to grab a ball jar out of the shelves that is filled with light brown feathers. She reaches into it, asks me to reach out both hands and close my eyes. She then goes on to ask me which hand I believe she put the down feathers in. Were it not for a certain light warmth coming up on one of my hands, I wouldn't have felt a difference. And suddenly, just like that, I started dreaming...
