.How to get there
The famous collection of classical modernism was initiated by art dealer and Heinz Berggruen. For more than 40 years he collected masterpieces from Giacometti, Klee, Matisse and Picasso, which he sold in an act of conciliation to the city of Berlin below value. As a child of a Jewish family he had to leave Berlin during the time of Holocaust. In 1996 he returned in the city of his birth and became a citizen of honour thanks to his generosity.
Berggruen’s collection is exhibited in Berggruen Museum ever since. The building was used for military purposes during 19th century, but after the Second World War it was turned into a museum. Today it contains two buildings that hold the impressive collection and which are surrounded by a sculpture garden.
