.How to get there
When I first ate at the Lokal's forerunner - the Kantine on Joachimstraße - it felt very much like a field trip to the countryside. Idyllically situated in the quiet backyard, the daily lunch menu was conceived in full accordance with the general credo of simplicity. Seasonal food, full flavour and prepared fuss-free.
Initiated as the canteen for adjacent architectural office David Chipperfield Architects, the lunch spot first opened its doors to the public and then went on to become a great dinner spot as well. The teardown in May 2011 sealed the canteen's fate.
On Linienstraße 16, Maren Thimm and her chef Gary Hoppengardner opened up the successor Das Lokal only 6 months later. A lot of the old concept survived. The interior charms the visitor with simplicity and whimsical details. Daily changing lunch deals are served on weekdays from noon to 4 pm and from 6pm on, you can choose from a varying dinner menu.
Dishes, made from regional ingredients, are served on tables by designer Katja Buchholz and, during the cold season, go by the names of 'Wild Pigeon over Carrots, Sweetheart Cabbage and Scallions with a Caramel-Beer-Stock' or 'Bulgur-Carrot-Patty on Walnuts, Broccoli, Mushrooms and Radicchio'. Simply the best!
