“You are leaving the American Sector” is up to this day written on a sign in English, German, Russian and French at Checkpoint Charlie. The table is still a reminder of when its Allies divided Berlin into four sectors.
Checkpoint Charlie was the most important border crossing from East to West and is still the most famous of its kind. People can even visit a replica border control house on the border of Mitte to Kreuzberg. In the adjoining outdoor gallery, visitors can inform themselves about the importance of the control point.
To gain a more far-reaching impression of Berlin during the times of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery and the memorial on Bernauer Straße are good sites. Visitors can see there a section of the former border fortification.
